7 Ways to Cultivate Delight in Schools

Could we, like sunshine, invite delight into our schools? Currently, I am exploring the paradox of responsibility and delight.  As educators, we hold one in each hand.  I wonder how we can balance both the responsibility with the delight? I was wet behind the ears when I was hired as a Principal. In my early thirties, I had lots to learn.  I was very responsible.  But, I needed to grow in how to delight in my work. I can pinpoint the year when I learned the importance of morning…

Good Survey of Bad Reading Methods

Typical stats say that we have more than 30 million illiterates plus a much larger group of people who are semi-literate.

if you define a reader as someone who can curl up with a good book, we probably have 75+ million nonreaders.

Think about it. How is all that possible? Easy. Our Education Establishment is really good at illiteracy. They play games – an endless charade…

PAUL SMITHS, N.Y. — The Heartland Institute, a conservative think tank known for attacking climate science, has been mailing a slim, glossy book to public school teachers throughout the United States. The institute says it plans to send out as many as 200,000 copies, until virtually every science educator in America has… Continue

What to do on a lame duck school day by Jennifer Gonzalez

What to Do on Lame Duck School Days

Posted on April 23, 2017 by Jennifer Gonzalez

The term “lame duck” is most often used to describe a president who is still sitting in office after his or her successor has been elected. Technically this person is still the president, but his or her decision-making power is generally perceived to be minimal.

We have something like that in school: those days when technically we’re still in school, but because it’s right before…

Successful Leaders Develop Their Expertise Through Daily Practice

Leadership, like life, is a journey best taken along with a healthy dose of self-knowledge, social conscience, empathy, compassion, and humility. What is taught and learned in administrative preparation programs are the nuts and bolts: the law, finance, labor relations, supervision, governance, the details of the daily responsibilities. These are all necessary knowledge and skills for the administrative role, but they are not all one needs to know. The successful ones, the ones who…

Where Did All the Black Teachers Go?

APRIL 20, 2017

Editorial Observer

By BRENT STAPLES

I started first grade at an all-black elementary school in Chester, Pa., a deeply segregated factory town near Philadelphia, in 1957 — three years after the Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Board of Education that school segregation was unconstitutional.

The crisply dressed first graders who moved hesitantly that day through the halls of the Booker… Continue

Leading Successful School / Business / Higher Ed Partnerships

One of the facets 21st century schools have in common is partnerships with business and higher education.  Many schools and districts already have partnerships that can be maximized with a willingness to recognize that:

  • Students continue to fail to see a connection between what is happening in their classrooms and their future lives.
  • Teachers do not have experience working in the fields of their content area.
  • Targeted professional development that…

Learn Construction skills

House construction is at boom in Australia and many bigger projects usually need many construction contractors hence creating a huge need of home construction workers.

Leaders, We Can Interrupt the School to Prison Pipeline

The phrase 'tough on crime' sits atop a silent undertone. It is not about early intervention or after school programs or drug prevention programs. It is about punishments and putting "them" away.  Steven H. Cook, a former police officer who became a federal prosecutor based in Knoxville, Tennessee, has just been appointed as a top lieutenant in Attorney General Jeff Sessions' administration.  According to the Washington Post:

"Sessions and Cook are preparing a…

Racism and White Privilege: There is Always More to Learn

Schools reinforce societal values...but should they?  It is part of the intention of public schools, isn't it? Preparing children to grow into contributing citizens in our society is certainly part of the curriculum. Educators carry with them the limits and biases of the society as well as the mores that make us a civil society. Without realizing it, and with no bad intention, schools reinforce the effects of racism and send graduates off who are holding those very societal values we…

My Name is Michael: An Autistic Student Explains Autism

This video was part of a class project in which students were asked to tell a story. Michael wanted to convey to his classmates what his life is like as a person with autism, and with the help of one of his teachers, John Lozano, he used images and video to tell his story, an effort that took almost seven months. Michael decided the kinds of pictures and footage and directed Mr. Lozano how it should come together.

The music in this video is “untitled,” by Kina Grannis. It isn’t that…

Mentors.net - a Professional Development Resource

Mentors.net was founded in 1995 as a professional development resource for school administrators leading new teacher induction programs. It soon evolved into a destination where both new and student teachers could reflect on their teaching experiences. Now, nearly thirty years later, Mentors.net has taken on a new direction—serving as a platform for beginning teachers, preservice educators, and

other professionals to share their insights and experiences from the early years of teaching, with a focus on integrating artificial intelligence. We invite you to contribute by sharing your experiences in the form of a journal article, story, reflection, or timely tips, especially on how you incorporate AI into your teaching

practice. Submissions may range from a 500-word personal reflection to a 2,000-word article with formal citations.
