Meditation in Elementary School?

One of my editors is researching a piece on mindfulness initiatives in elementary schools.  Do you know of an elementary school that has introduced meditation or breathing techniques to help children focus?  If so, please contact Linda Rodgers at

East Meets West: Transcontinental Chat Magic

Shiver me timbers! When could be more entertaining that a dress up party for the launch of the first transcontinental NYEDChat and TLAP online chat last night. It may not have been the Golden Globes or the Bammy Awards, but it was a celebratory event just the same.  The lead pirate, Dave Burgess, author of the well-know professional text, Teach Like A…

Invisible

Last night at the Grammy Awards, Hunter Hayes debuted his new single, "Invisible."  What a great song for young people experiencing bullying, or just trying to fit in.  Even though "No-Name Calling Week" is officially over, you still may want to share this with your students.

I want to make a confession. My concern is not primarily with religion. I did not write the article to support…

The 'Tiger Mom' Superiority Complex

From time to time, every Indian American finds an email in his or her inbox, wearing a font of many colors, like the one my grandfather once sent me: "Take a Pride--Being an Indian. 38% of Doctors in U.S.A. are Indians. 36% of NASA employees are…

Krokodil, and damages seen and unseen

When I first heard about krokodil, and the horrific damage it does to addicts, I started thinking about the damage done to children by dysfunctional teaching methods.

You might think, isn’t that a stretch? The physical damage done by krokodil is so obvious and horrific, you might want to think it’s in a category by itself. Can this obvious physical damage be compared to the hidden cognitive damage done by…
