Three Myths About Today’s Students by Paul Kirchner

Three Myths About Today’s Students

In this thought-provoking article in Educational Psychologist, Paul Kirschner (Open University of the Netherlands) and Jeroen van Merrienboer (Maastricht University) attack three common beliefs about teaching and learning.

• Belief #1: Today’s students are information-savvy “digital natives.” The theory is that young people have been immersed in technology all their lives and are therefore able to multi-task (for example, simultaneously doing…

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh - Teaching Tool

This must have been my fantasy summer.  I'm usually not a fan of the fantasy genre, but this summer, many of the middle grade and young adult books that I read were fantasies.  And one of my favorite fantasies was Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh.

This Newbery winner is an enchanting tale and a great teaching tool for illustrating the importance of world-building in any novel.  This is a clear example of setting driving the story in much the same way that geography shapes…

Classical Education is worth checking out

I've written several articles about classical education, and finally came up with this sweeping epiphany: if you tossed out what is typically done in public schools and dropped in a classical education curriculum, two things would happen: schools would get much better and the costs would go down.

I just interviewed Laurie Thomas, author of a new book called "Not Trivial--how studying the traditional liberal arts can set you free."

 …

Honoring Grandparents Who Affect the Reading Lives of Their Families

In looking back upon my childhood, I have vivid recollections of vacations in the quiet town of Rome, New York. There, each summer, I renewed a bond with my immigrant grandmother, who could neither read nor write in English, but had practical knowledge, wisdom, and a strong love for learning. Through a series of weekly walks to the library, Nonnie touched my life in an endearing…
