After the diagnosis of ADHD or Autism, parents often call me feeling overwhelmed when trying to understand how to put together a plan to manage their child's needs. ADHD or Autism can best be managed through a combination of modalities including but not limited to medical and behavioral management treatments. Parents interact with their children on a daily basis and are at the "Point of Performance" where…

I just wanted to recommend to all educators this wonderful and inciteful book. It was recommended to me by a colleague and it's my turn to pass it on. It is "A Whole New Mind" by Daniel Pink. It talks about the right-brainers and how now it is there time. It makes so much sense and it will awaken that side of your brain and make you aware of how this could and should affect education.
I have a new awareness and support of what I believe in. Definitely a must read.

In a recent contribution to the growth/value-added discussion on the DATAG listserv, it was stated that "We invite comment from any of our DATAG Colleagues but are especially interested in the opinions of our resident statisticians." The arc of this discussion is exactly what I had feared - and predicted in my initial posting on May 31.
It runs like this: Growth and value-added models are extremely technical. Here, try to read these extremely technical articles. If you do not…

There is a website I've been made aware of called
Our Courts located at:
http://www.ourcourts.org/ It was a project created with the help of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor to help children learn about their government, its history, and the importance of being a good citizen. Why is this important today? I just learned that one can spend almost two hours trying to obtain signatures from party members to place candidates on a ballot for a primary, where…

The Capital Region BOCES recently sponsored a useful conference entitled
Ready, Set, Grow!: School Improvement through Value-Added Analysis. Value-Added is clearly an idea whose time has come, and the conference was co-sponsored by the New York State School Boards Association, the New York State Council of School Superintendents, and the School Administrators Association of New York State. If you looked in the eyes of the attendees - it was a crowded house - there was a mixture of…

Trail Blazing...
In reference to computer technology, it seems to me that those born before 1970 are the tourists and those born after 1970 are the natives in the land of hardware and software applications. Maybe, for the first time in history the tourists are teaching the natives...maybe not? Let's leave it up for discussion.
No matter how you feel about it, computer technology and its companion, the steady increase in information, have been invading society for nearly 4…

I imagine it will be anti-climatic when the bureaucratic button is finally pushed to close Part I of this year's biggest data drama. The Special Education Snapshot is - or will soon be - done.
For those of you who will not start watching until Season Two, the special education snapshot - or the annual count of all New York State students who receive special education services as of the first school day in December - was reported this year, not through aggregate counts, but via…

Chapter 57 of the Laws of 2007 stipulates that New York State teachers
cannot be awarded tenure unless they successfully use student performance data (including, but not limited to, performance on state assessments) to guide their instruction. A 2008 amendment to Chapter 57 prohibits districts from using test scores to evaluate teachers, while maintaining the requirement that teachers use test scores to improve instruction.
School districts must therefore provide teachers with…

Every Now and then I stand back and take a look at what's going on in the world.
The world is changing rapidly!
We are living in the information age. Technology has once again forged its way into our homes, our schools, and the workplace. We have become digitized, virtual, distant, and “real.” The question we must ask ourselves is, “How do we continue to develop as a society within the realms of this revolution?”
Everyone is a pioneer. Our familiarity with life…

Three changes have affected education in the United States; all involve access.
All children now have the right to access educational services. There are no more places to hide those students who are harder to teach or slower to learn.
All customers of educational services - students, teachers, parents, and other taxpayers - now have a right to access educational data. There are no more places to hide those teachers and those practices that fail to educate.
And,…

Henry Ford said, "Whether you think you can or think you can't, either way you are right." As educators we must believe we can, as we instill the belief, you can, in the lives we touch. Creating independent, fearless, and courageous learners requires interdependency between administrators, teachers, students, and parents. We must be willing to explore, establish and implement collaborative strategies that effectively provide an inclusive educational environment.
Educators must…

In many respects, the success of AIS and RtI strategies are dependent upon how inviting the teacher is when delivering the instruction. If the teacher does not see the student as able, valued and responsible, the chances of the student accepting the invitation to learn are slim.
I'm interested in sharing information with my colleagues about Invitational Education. This practice provides simple and powerful strategies for school adults to maintain an intentional stance of respect,…

The Oscars of college applications are about to begin. The envelope please - is a phrase both for parents and seniors beginning around April 1st. All those months of waiting come to an end, and a new challenge begins. What school do I choose? Is it an ivy league, honors program, private school, public state university or community college? Regardless of the weight of the envelope, and the level of the school, decisions are about to made on more than the prestige of a name, and the offer of…

Second, I am open to any suggestions and/or comments on my background and experience in education as I am looking for opportunities to utilize my experience and expertise here on Long Island. What Student Test-Takers Share with Ejected Airline Passengers
By Alfie Kohn
Social media exploded in early April after a video was posted of a doctor being dragged off a United flight for which he had a ticket. The outrage continued to build for days not just because we could watch what this man experienced but because the incident stirred up long-simmering resentment over how airlines treat most of their passengers every day.
Some years ago, I was on a United flight…
