All eyes on North Carolina

All eyes on North Carolina

Teacher salaries are losing ground fast in North Carolina, reports Dave DeWitt for NPR. In an effort to give more control to local districts, the state legislature passed sweeping changes to public education, many of which affected teachers directly. No state has seen a more dramatic decrease in teacher-salary rankings in the past 10 years, and other changes in public education are unprecedented, making North Carolina closely…

College-prep revolt

College-prep revolt

A standards rebellion is sweeping the country, promoted by Republicans and Democrats alike, writes Stephanie Simon for Politico.com. The backlash stems in part from the Common Core, but is also pushback against the idea that all students must be ready for college, regardless of intentions. Manufacturing associations, trade groups, and farm lobbies have bolstered this anger, arguing universal college prep is elitist, demeans…

New Project Part II

The goal of critical thinking skills related to graduate requirements began with a conversation. I will first explain the plan, then how we arrived at this end point.

Students entering the AAMF free ESL classes are exposed to three distinct levels of curriculum and instruction. The curriculum is provided by the Art of Learning. Each level has prescribed lessons and guidelines; however, facilitators are provided with additional time for creativity and innovation. The thought is to… Continue

Everyone should know who Mona McNee is...

Mona McNee, who lives in the UK, is a life-long phonics advocate. She is almost 90. She is still fighting!

Mona is the author of "The Great Reading Disaster," which explains the UK situation, which is  perhaps even more pathetic and dismal than the USA situation.

She is also the creator of the "Step-by-Step" reading program, which you can get on the Internet for free.

Her story, and her beliefs, are an excellent way for people to…

New Project Part I

How do we get students to think critically in a one-year program? This was the new project for my return to India. The AAMF in coordination with the Art of Learning prescribe opportunity through aligned curriculum driven instruction for students in New Delhi to acquire the English language. This is a one-year program, free to those who are willing to participate 6 days per week for one hour and forty-five minutes. As stated earlier, the successful implementation of an LMS, music in the… Continue

Updated Program

It is good to be back in Delhi. Familiar places and friends have made this an extraordinary experience. On my first day I have been provided with an update from the work completed over the course of the year.

Let me first provide an overview of the last working session. The AAMF organization provides free ESL classes for students across the Delhi city. The last visit resulted in the idea to create a Learning Management System (LMS), embed music into the curriculum as vehicle to… Continue

Lefty Learning and Shameless Self Promotion

Read my article on lefties and learning in the March issue of Scholastic Parent and Child.  It is always exciting to see one of your own articles in print, but this one is especially thrilling for me.  While researching this article, I had the honor of communicating with Howard Gardner.  That's right, THE Howard Gardner who developed the theory of Multiple Intelligences.  He could not have been…

Ten School Leadership Lessons Inspired by The Godfather by Christopher Wooleyhand, Ph.D.

The Godfather is arguably one of the best books and movies ever produced. While the violence associated with the film should never be glorified, there are many messages in the movie that can be used to inspire thoughtful leadership in education. My wife, Debbie, and I collaborated to bring you the following ten lessons inspired by the Godfather:

1. “Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.”

Leave the hostility. When working with families and staff you will get farther with… Continue

Join the Resistance

After World War II, all the people who had joined the Resistance were hailed as heroes. Everyone else was considered a weakling and/or a dupe.

If we ever win the Education Wars (by that I mean, if ever sensible pragmatic education practices become the norm), we're going to look back at the Education Establishment we have now as subversives and greedy careerists.

Well, that’s my sense of it.

Accordingly, I’m always…
