Education: the epicenter of injustice in our society
Low-income children of color are at the epicenter of injustice in our society, writes Mark Warren in The New England Journal of Public Policy. It will take a social movement to break this cycle, but education reformers seldom think in movement terms. Most reformers take a technical or an organizational approach, concentrating on how education is delivered, e.g., improving curricula or better training…

The documentary "Life Itself" about the life of Roger Ebert is a multi-dimensional study of a very interesting man and his work. He was the first film critic to receive a Pulitzer Prize (1975) for film criticism. His writing was recognized as being insightful and revelatory. As a critic, he was viewed as a true expert of the cinema. One slice of the documentary that is of particular importance to educators is when Martin Scorsese spoke about receiving reviews from Roger Ebert.…

By way of setting the stage, dyslexia is for sure a huge topic. It is probably a huge fraud. And there seems to be a significant shift in attitude about this subject.
What we know for sure is that the public schools use dyslexia as an excuse for the bad results they get in reading. Dyslexia is also used as a hook for fundraising by the International Dyslexia Association.
The Cynic’s Guide to Education would tell you that our public…

Reading is just of the activities that not everyone can deal with. Some maybe lucky that they don't have trouble dealing with anything that they want to read. But, try to consider and think of others who happened to experience some difficulty when it comes to reading.

Any current evaluation tool based upon established teaching and leading standards, no matter how they came to be, can serve as architecture. They are the "what" of the process. Think of them as the steel beams of the process...and that is all. What happens as the floors, ceilings, windows, HVAC systems, walls, and furnishings are put in place remains a locally controlled issue. They are the "how" of the process. The "how" is most certainly a personal, and locally…

An article in the New York Times, signed by everybody on the editorial board, argued that every problem in the schools is due to a shortage of money, and racial problems.
Basically, the New York Times claims this. Gov. Cuomo claims this. And the Regents claim this. Each ends up in the same spot, although coming from different directions and with different emphasis. To grow up the child of well-educated parents in an affluent American home is to hit the verbal lottery, writes Robert Pondiscio on the Thomas B. Fordham Institute website. Verbal parents chatter incessantly, and offer a running commentary on everything in a child's life. In sharp contrast, early disadvantages in language among low-income children -- both a low volume of words and little variety in how words are used --…
