Differentiating Staff Development to Grow Teacher Leadership by Christopher Wooleyhand, Ph.D.

This is a condensed version of an article I wrote for the spring 2014 edition of Living Education eMagazine.

The National Staff Development Council’s Standards for Staff Development provide guidance to school leaders focused on fostering high-quality professional learning communities. Principals who are willing to utilize the standards will find that they enable them to address the varied needs of teachers, which, in turn, enhances the learning of an increasingly diverse student… Continue

What Writing Is and Isn’t by Jeff Anderson

Effective Writing Instruction

(Originally titled “What Writing Is and Isn’t”)

“Let’s keep this in perspective,” says writer Jeff Anderson in an article in Educational Leadership. “The Common Core State Standards are a guiding document. Educators must look beyond the artificial boundaries assumed in such a document and dive into pedagogy, process, content knowledge, and research that reveals best practice in teaching…

Connections: The Gift of a Great Teacher by Steve Almond

What Teaching Is All About

In this evocative Boston Globe Magazine article, novelist Steve Almond remembers the precise moment when he felt literature come alive: his ninth-grade English teacher picked up a copy of The Catcher in the Rye and read the first chapter to the class. “Nearly every person I know has some version of this story,” says Almond: “The moment when a teacher changes the course of your life. A good teacher, after all,…

A Principal’s Proposal for Testing - TLC (Teaching, Learning, and Checking In) by Carol Muscarella

April 2014

Dear_______________________

As you are profoundly aware, there has been much controversy surrounding not only the Common Core Learning Standards, but more specifically the testing of students in grades three through eight.    As an elementary principal I have had many conversations with parents regarding their concerns about testing.  I have also had many meetings with teachers who express their concerns about when the test is…

Why Common Core failed: a short explanation.

Most articles about Common Core try to  plunge into this extremely complex and unexplainable thing, and explain it. Good luck on that. Very quickly, everyone is adrift.

I tried to do more of a panorama shot, standing well back. I argue that  Common Core is an unholy alliance between the wrong people (Bill Gates and our Education Establishment), both trying to sell the wrong ideas for the wrong…

Mentors.net - a Professional Development Resource

Mentors.net was founded in 1995 as a professional development resource for school administrators leading new teacher induction programs. It soon evolved into a destination where both new and student teachers could reflect on their teaching experiences. Now, nearly thirty years later, Mentors.net has taken on a new direction—serving as a platform for beginning teachers, preservice educators, and

other professionals to share their insights and experiences from the early years of teaching, with a focus on integrating artificial intelligence. We invite you to contribute by sharing your experiences in the form of a journal article, story, reflection, or timely tips, especially on how you incorporate AI into your teaching

practice. Submissions may range from a 500-word personal reflection to a 2,000-word article with formal citations.
