Is it my imagination or is it extremely difficult, whether you are qualified or not, to get a job on the Island, except Hempstead, Roosevelt and Wyandanch, if you are African American or if you don't "know anyone"?

Hello All Dissertation Students,
I am in the process of finding out a topic for a
anthropology dissertation , more specifically in forensic anthropology. Although I am quite sure what I want to do, I am interested in having views of others in the fields, and where they think research is lacking. With a bit of luck, my ideas will be amongst the areas suggested!
I am…

YouTube web site. ATIA invites you to create a short video that presents an inspiring story about how assistive technology…

Have you heard about the
Discovery Educator Network? Many districts on Long Island subscribe to the Discovery Streaming service, but many teachers are not aware of the added benefits to becoming a member. If you are one of those educators, do not hesitate to ask me any questions that relate to becoming a DEN Star Educator, the Discovery Streaming service or any ed tech advice in general. I would be very happy to help…

Ever heard the saying ‘He is a big fish in a little pond’ well a lot of people are under the misconception they hold a lot more power than they do.
Psst don’t tell anyone but you actually don’t have any power at all other than that you have over your own thoughts and actions. Sad but true we all have free will and no one can control another person or the world in which they live. Oh we can create the illusion of power but that’s all it is an illusion.
We can give people the…

Due to funding challenges, LI Works is in jeopardy of closing our doors in May 2009. That will end the 10 years of collaboration between the business and educational communities (kindergarten through graduate school) and workforce readiness programs across the region including:
Program Highlights
15,000 students and 1,700 businesses who've met at our Internship Fairs/ Website database

After the diagnosis of ADHD or Autism, parents often call me feeling overwhelmed when trying to understand how to put together a plan to manage their child's needs. ADHD or Autism can best be managed through a combination of modalities including but not limited to medical and behavioral management treatments. Parents interact with their children on a daily basis and are at the "Point of Performance" where…

I just wanted to recommend to all educators this wonderful and inciteful book. It was recommended to me by a colleague and it's my turn to pass it on. It is "A Whole New Mind" by Daniel Pink. It talks about the right-brainers and how now it is there time. It makes so much sense and it will awaken that side of your brain and make you aware of how this could and should affect education.
I have a new awareness and support of what I believe in. Definitely a must read.

In a recent contribution to the growth/value-added discussion on the DATAG listserv, it was stated that "We invite comment from any of our DATAG Colleagues but are especially interested in the opinions of our resident statisticians." The arc of this discussion is exactly what I had feared - and predicted in my initial posting on May 31.
It runs like this: Growth and value-added models are extremely technical. Here, try to read these extremely technical articles. If you do not…

There is a website I've been made aware of called
Our Courts located at:
http://www.ourcourts.org/ It was a project created with the help of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor to help children learn about their government, its history, and the importance of being a good citizen. Why is this important today? I just learned that one can spend almost two hours trying to obtain signatures from party members to place candidates on a ballot for a primary, where…

The Capital Region BOCES recently sponsored a useful conference entitled
Ready, Set, Grow!: School Improvement through Value-Added Analysis. Value-Added is clearly an idea whose time has come, and the conference was co-sponsored by the New York State School Boards Association, the New York State Council of School Superintendents, and the School Administrators Association of New York State. If you looked in the eyes of the attendees - it was a crowded house - there was a mixture of…

Trail Blazing...
In reference to computer technology, it seems to me that those born before 1970 are the tourists and those born after 1970 are the natives in the land of hardware and software applications. Maybe, for the first time in history the tourists are teaching the natives...maybe not? Let's leave it up for discussion.
No matter how you feel about it, computer technology and its companion, the steady increase in information, have been invading society for nearly 4…

I imagine it will be anti-climatic when the bureaucratic button is finally pushed to close Part I of this year's biggest data drama. The Special Education Snapshot is - or will soon be - done.
For those of you who will not start watching until Season Two, the special education snapshot - or the annual count of all New York State students who receive special education services as of the first school day in December - was reported this year, not through aggregate counts, but via…
