Race to the Top-Equity and Oportunity? by Christopher Wooleyhand, Ph.D.

President Barack Obama recently announced a new initiative called Race to the Top-Equity and Opportunity. The aims of the program are admirable. The President wants to support states and districts in identifying and closing educational opportunity and achievement gaps (http://www.ed.gov/racetothetop-equity-opportunity). The President, like many politicians and educators, recognizes that we need to do more to ensure that all… Continue

A quick piece about reading, addressed to all teachers

Strange but true, our Education Establishment has managed to keep almost every bad idea about reading in play.

Remember that, circa 1935, the official dogma in the United States was that every child should memorize every English word as a DESIGN. This was known as Look-say. It was completely insane. This official hoax has suffered many slings and arrows. But the amazing thing is that it’s still alive, a little…

I've come to think that a school superintendent's main mission today is to protect teachers and kids from the ideological madness around us. If I can keep education reform from "helping" them, I'll have…

BELGRADE LAKES, Me. — I WAS in trouble. The first few analogies were pretty straightforward — along the lines of “leopard is to spotted as zebra is to striped” — but now I was in the tall weeds of nuance. Kangaroo is to marsupial as the giant squid is to — I don’t know, maybe D) cephalopod? I looked up for a second at the back of the head of the girl in front of me. She had done this amazing thing… Continue

PEDAGOGY OF THE OPPRESSED by Paulo Freire

PAULO FREIRE: CHAPTER 2 OF PEDAGOGY OF THE OPPRESSED

"Education thus becomes an act of depositing, in which the students are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor. Instead of communicating, the teacher issues communiques and makes deposits which the students patiently receive, memorize, and repeat. This is the "banking' concept of education, in which the scope of action allowed to the…

Birth of a term: Unmedia

For 100 years, there has been a prejudice In the schools against facts and knowledge. Now we see the same tendency in the media.

The Times has become the very paradigm of what can only be called Unmedia. There seem to be many striking resemblance to the old media but they don't do much of a job. Thus the term Unmedia. Compare Uncola.

I think we live in what…

It's testing time, pass the tissues by Christopher Wooleyhand, Ph.D.

The month of March signals the beginning of testing season for Maryland elementary schools. It’s an annual rite of passage that takes time away from instruction, disrupts the regular schedule, brings children to tears, and produces a general fog of stress to schools across the state. The schedule for testing in our school looks like this:

MSA Reading and Math Grades 3rd-5th March 4-18

MSA Science Grade 5th March 24-April 4

PARCC Field Test (PBA) One 4th grade class March… Continue

inBloom Not Worth The Time or Money

On Thursday, February 20, New York State Department of Education officials announced plans to launch the EngageNY data portal in July, despite the recent and highly-publicized objections of parents, educators, school leaders, and some legislators.  This will be the first ever attempt to capture such a wide swath of personal information on every public school child and house it in one location.

The data, expected to be handled with care by the Gates-funded inBloom Inc., is…
