After six years of a 90+ minute train bus - commute from Manhattan to the Throggs Neck area of the Bronx, I now live within a 20 minute walk or 12 minute bike ride to work. (Yes, dear Reader, I  noted your gasps and moans and envy.)

When I bike to school, I am fully awake, fully oxygenated, and fully aware when I arrive.

Certainly we all know when we arrive at school with the early bird students, that they have rolled from a bed, to a car, to a spot on the hallway floor or cafeteria chair, and then to a classroom seat.

Has our culture of fear made it impossible for the neighborhood kids to walk or bike themselves to school?
