Students must identify which knowledge matters, ignore irrelevant details, recognize deeper structure, and adapt what they know to new circumstances.

For school leaders, this has a major implication: transfer should be visible in curriculum, instruction, and assessment—not simply mentioned in mission statements.

2. Build knowledge before demanding transfer.

Students should see concepts across multiple situations rather than repeatedly practicing one familiar format.

4. Look for explicit modeling of thinking.
Teachers should show students how experts identify relevant information, recognize patterns, and decide what knowledge to apply.

5. Gradually remove supports.
Scaffolds should help students become independent, not become permanent features of the task.

6. Examine assessments for novelty.
Ask: Does this assessment require students to think in a new context, or simply reproduce what they already practiced?
