In the 1970s in southeast Michigan hundreds of teachers were laid off each year because of declining student enrollment, some to be recalled only to be laid off again in subsequent years.

The teacher center of which I was a director offered “alternative careers for teachers” workshops. We brought in experts in interviewing and résumé writing, but the highlight of every workshop was a panel of former teachers who now worked in various businesses and industries, some of whom were highly placed in their companies.
