Excerpt:

It's a common problem in the US. Children in the second and third grades, even the fourth and fifth grades, are struggling readers. They guess; they skip ahead; they search for clues from context; they look at pictures to read words. Did I mention they guess? Typically, these children are unsuccessful in most school subjects and very unhappy.

The school may think this slow progress is fine. But perhaps you as a parent know younger children who've already learned to read. You worry that your child Is falling behind. You are right to worry.....

MY KID CAN'T READ? WHAT SHOULD I DO?  http://www.renewamerica.com/columns/bprice/180518

The US has tens of millions of functional illiterates. Maybe close to 50 million. Isn't that crazy? This is the grand achievement of an ideologically corrupted Education Establishment. They have convinced themselves that children unable to read are not that big a deal....What's so terrible? There are worse things, you know, like cancer and so on. Hey, treating books and literature as critical is just a fetish left over from another age. That's what John Dewey thought.

Everything turns on the reading problem. Teach all the kids  to read in the first grade, which is easy to do, and our schools would greatly improve, almost overnight. Cost? No, it would be much cheaper because we wouldn't  have all that remediation and psychiatric counseling and Ritalin prescriptions.

But here's a horrible secret. The people at the top of American public schools knew from the beginning that Whole Word would not work. They did it anyway and they have used every lie in the book to keep this thing in play.

Isn't it time to deal with the literacy problem? If we don't, then all of K-12 remains a scam.
