What are the warning signs of clinical depression in adolescents?

The Dim Bulb

The Occasional Musings of an Educator

The brain is capable of performing 10 quadrillion (that’s 10 to the 16th) “calculations,” or synaptic events, per second using only about 15 watts of power. At this rate, a computer as powerful as the human brain would require 1 gigawatt of power. Maybe a dim bulb isn't really as dim as it seems.

What are the warning signs of clinical depression in adolescents?

According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), the following are some warning signs of depression in adolescents:

  1. Persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness
  2. Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
  3. Significant changes in appetite or weight
  4. Insomnia or excessive sleeping
  5. Fatigue or loss of energy
  6. Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
  7. Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  8. Thoughts of death or suicide
  9. Irritability, anger, or hostility
  10. Physical complaints such as headaches or stomachaches

It is essential to note that not all adolescents with depression will display all of these symptoms. Some may display only a few of these symptoms, while others may display additional symptoms not listed here.

Research indicates that depression in adolescents is a prevalent and serious mental health condition that requires timely intervention. Untreated depression in adolescents can lead to significant impairment in academic, social, and personal functioning, as well as an increased risk of suicide (National Institute of Mental Health, 2021).
