The official view of dyslexia is that it is a mental impairment which a great percentage of children are born with. They bring this defect to the classroom. Naturally no reasonable person would expect our public schools to teach these defective students how to read, etc.
In this way, when schools decline and reading scores drop still lower, the Education Establishment has an all-purpose alibi.
However, as long as the reading wars have been going on, the phonics people claimed that virtually no kid has dyslexia. And that if you want to find the cause of reading problems, you have to look at faulty reading instruction. Specifically, all phonics experts say that memorizing sight-words will mess up a kid's ability to process words phonetically.
This is one of the central issues unfolding around us. Every parent, every teacher, every citizen should know why dyslexia is not what the establishment says it is.

As Mona McNee put it, "Kids don't have dyslexia. They have dysteachia."
