A Network Connecting School Leaders From Around The Globe
I am interested in learning more about second-career teachers. Particularly, I am interested in examining school administrators' perceptions in hiring, supporting and retaining second-career teachers.
Please feel free to share any experiences on this topic.
For clarity, "second-career teacher" is defined as an individual that has been employed in another profession prior to becoming a certified k-12 teacher. The route of certification is often an alternative route, but it is not always the case.

Joan,
Thank you for sharing. Studying this phenomenon has been a terrific experience. At some point do you think I can contact you via messaging through this site or personal e-mail?
I am interested in learning more about second-career teachers especially from the perspective of administrators. In reviewing literature, few studies mention the reasons administrators hire these second-career teachers, and even fewer discuss how to tap into the wealth of expertise and resources second-career teachers possess. As of now, preliminarily, it seems that administrators like the maturity, sense of mission and content knowledge second-career teachers possess, but they (administrators) lack the knowledge of second-career teachers and how to capitalize on their skill set, and expertise in potentially applying a practical, rich curriculum. Often these teachers adapt by accepting a more prescriptive curriculum- known as "washing out"- which, personally, seems like hiring these individuals defeats the overall purpose. Nevertheless, the data is mixed on second-career teachers' satisfaction levels, predominantly due to lack of administration support. Thanks again.
