A Network Connecting School Leaders From Around The Globe
The new site -- Bouncingball.weebly.com -- has five videos to show the concept in action. There is Mother Goose, Edgar Allan Poe, Dr. Seuss, and the Wizard of Oz. A total of about 25 minutes. Easy to check out and to reflect on the possibilities.
The bouncing ball forces children to read in the proper direction, and to take notice of syllables. (This idea was invented more than 50 years ago but never used in the teaching of reading.)
We think these videos could help with young children; older children having difficulties; and probably special ed children.
We also hope these videos can help lifelong illiterates. Suppose they are in prison; they have time. They could listen to these things over and over again, until their brains absorb the phonetic approach. The Wizard of Oz story is perfect for this. ( Note: even fluent readers may find they concentrate more when a bouncing ball is dictating the pace.)
There is also the possibility that foreigners could be pulled into learning English.
----------------------------------------------------------------
There is another dimension to this whole project. Organizations often hand out books to poor families, but they don’t give anything with the books that might help the families get started. That's not good enough. So I’ve been giving a lot of thought to what I call Early Literacy Pack (ELP). These videos are one item that could be in every organization’s ELP.
We welcome feedback.
The “we” is me in Virginia and a teacher/techie in Hawaii. He is especially expert in the SLS concept, which means Same Language Subtitling as a way to teach languages. SLS is used around the world and should be used much more in the US than it is now. There is more information about his work on the site.
