New York State and its teacher unions have reached an historic agreement to rate public school teachers’ job performance, based in part on their students’ scores on standardized tests of English and math.
Many questions must be settled: Should teachers’ names and ratings be made public? How exactly will teachers’ classroom success be compared with that of colleagues, given that students differ in terms of family background and other factors?
To address these questions and others, newsday.com is hosting a Web chat from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Long Islanders are invited to submit questions and comments, both in advance and in real time, for selection and responses from our panelists.
Guest panelists are Arnold Dodge, assistant professor and chairman of the Department of Educational Leadership and Administration at the LIU Post campus in Brookville, and Michael Dawidziak, a Bohemia-based political consultant, pollster and frequent contributor to Newsday’s opinion section. John Hildebrand, Newsday’s senior education reporter, will serve as moderator.
Be sure to post your questions ahead of time by entering them into the box below. If you're reading this on your mobile device, you can email questions to tc.mccarthy@newsday.com.

Mentors.net - a Professional Development Resource
Mentors.net was founded in 1995 as a professional development resource for school administrators leading new teacher induction programs. It soon evolved into a destination where both new and student teachers could reflect on their teaching experiences. Now, nearly thirty years later, Mentors.net has taken on a new direction—serving as a platform for beginning teachers, preservice educators, and
other professionals to share their insights and experiences from the early years of teaching, with a focus on integrating artificial intelligence. We invite you to contribute by sharing your experiences in the form of a journal article, story, reflection, or timely tips, especially on how you incorporate AI into your teaching
practice. Submissions may range from a 500-word personal reflection to a 2,000-word article with formal citations.
