During the Arts Panel, the question was raised about how do we address the digital divide. This made me think how do we ddress the  number of "divides" that exist. As I listened I realized that there is probably an "art divide" - how many families do not themselves value art and therefore would never even bring their children to a museum. What about the socio-economic divide right here on Long Island -  there are school districts due to their tax base that provide resources, activities and experiences that other Long Island districts simply can't. What do we do????

Ask businesses for resources, and not just the local businesses, but large corporations. Also, I think I saw a wish-list website, a while back, where people can donate items that specific teachers request for their classes.

 

Thank you for your presentation, btw. It was a pleasant surprise to see how art could be interpreted into a video. I can't wait to try the new type of vertical and horizontal bar code.

 

 

Corinne, there is such a disconnect between the have and have nots and like economic disparities, exposure to the arts is no different. As a child, my parents would take my family (4 kids under 7) into the city to take advantage of the wonderful museums and culture so that we could be exposed to something "bigger" than ourselves. Exposure to culture like art, music, architecture, science, etc. does not have to be limited because of financial constraints.

Alyson did a wonderful job explaining how she brings culture to her students through virtual field trips for example. Many programs that museums offer are free or low cost. It also doesn't cost a penny to be connected to one's community. Many communities have wonderful resources that families and schools don't take advantage of. 

Maybe we can talk about some of the barriers (or perceived barriers) and work on how handling those might make for better experiences? After all, if we truly don't know what the issues are (language, financial, transportation, etc.) then how can we find ways to solve them?
