When teachers assess student writing, the mistakes that are easiest to see may exert far more influence than the mistakes that matter most.
Furer and colleagues distinguish between low-scope errors, such as spelling mistakes that can be detected by examining a single word, and high-scope errors, such as problems with coherence or vocabulary that require the reader to process a sentence or larger portion of the text.
