What works for social-emotional learning?

This research brief from the Center on Great Teachers & Leaders at American Institutes for Research explores instructional practices that promote social-emotional learning. Through a review of existing research, the Center identified 10 practices (they note that the list is not exhaustive) that represent general teaching practices that can be used in classrooms to support positive learning environments, social-emotional competencies, and academic learning. For each practice, the report provides an example of how the practice can be implemented. For example, for the practice "Self-Reflection and Self-Assessment," the report says, "When going over fractions in fourth-grade math class, the teacher asks students to share and come up with multiple ways to demonstrate their solution to adding fractions. The teacher then engages students in a discussion to connect the different approaches to determine how well their approaches worked in solving the problem." It's always encouraging to see holistic education begin to creep into our conventional schools however we must ask the broader question, what is the impact of forcing kids to learn fractions (maintaining the content of the article) when one or more of our children may not be interested or ready, on each individual child's social and emotional development? This is a question which begs us to think outside the CCSS box and reflect on the impact of one set of standards for all students.
