Teachers Report Improvements in Student Engagement, Safety and Classroom Behavior Following Implementation of Strict Cell Phone Policies
PRESS RELEASE FROM STUDY.COM
August 28, 2024
A recent survey conducted by Study.com, published in a press release on August 28, 2024, reveals significant improvements in student engagement, safety, and classroom behavior following the implementation of strict cell phone policies in middle and high schools. This study, conducted as the new school year begins, addresses growing concerns among educators, parents, and students about the impact of cell phone use in educational settings.
One of the most notable outcomes of the survey is the reported improvement in classroom behavior. According to the survey, 68 percent of teachers observed better classroom behavior after the implementation of strict cell phone policies. Additionally, there was nearly a 20 percent reduction in the time teachers spent managing cell phone use during class, allowing them to focus more on teaching and student interaction. Dana Bryson, Senior Vice President of Social Impact at Study.com, emphasized that these findings are aligned with the organization's mission to support educators by providing tools that enhance teacher-student relationships. With less time spent on phone management, teachers can dedicate more attention to fostering a positive and productive classroom environment.
The survey also highlights improvements in student engagement, a challenge that has become more pronounced in the post-pandemic educational landscape. Seventy-six percent of teachers believe that strict cell phone policies have led to better student engagement. This percentage is even higher in certain states, with Illinois reporting an 80 percent improvement, and both Florida and Texas showing a 78 percent improvement. These findings suggest that limiting cell phone use in classrooms can help students concentrate better on their studies, thereby enhancing their overall learning experience.
Another significant finding of the survey is the perceived increase in safety for both students and teachers. Seventy percent of teachers in districts with strict cell phone policies reported improved student safety, particularly in reducing incidents of bullying. Moreover, 69 percent of teachers felt that their own safety had improved under these policies. This sense of increased security was especially pronounced in states like New Jersey, New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Texas, where teachers reported safety improvements exceeding the national average.
The survey collected data from more than 1,103 middle and high school teachers across the United States, with a diverse demographic representation. Approximately 71 percent of respondents identified as White, nearly 14 percent as Black, about 6 percent as Hispanic or Latine, and around 5 percent as Asian. The results were statistically significant in several key states, including New York, California, Florida, New Jersey, Illinois, and Pennsylvania, where teachers reported higher-than-average improvements in both student engagement and classroom management.
The findings from this survey suggest that strict cell phone policies in schools can lead to substantial improvements in classroom behavior, student engagement, and safety. These results provide valuable insights for educators and policymakers who are considering the adoption of similar policies in their own schools.
