What was the brief description given to U.S. soldiers in Europe during World War II to help them understand what they were fighting for?

by Michael Keany

During World War II, U.S. soldiers deployed to Europe were often given a very simple, values-based explanation of what they were fighting for. The message was intentionally brief and direct:

They were fighting for freedom — and against tyranny.

More specifically, the U.S. War Department and military training materials emphasized that American troops were fighting:

  • To defeat Nazi aggression
  • To stop dictatorship and oppression
  • To defend democracy
  • To protect the freedoms guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution
  • To secure a peaceful world for future generations

One of the clearest public statements of this purpose came from President Franklin D. Roosevelt in his 1941 “Four Freedoms” speech. He described the fundamental goals of the war as securing:

  1. Freedom of speech
  2. Freedom of worship
  3. Freedom from want
  4. Freedom from fear

These “Four Freedoms” became a moral shorthand for what American soldiers were fighting to defend.

In military briefings and morale materials, the message was often condensed even further to something like:

“We fight so that free people may live without fear.”

The contrast was framed starkly:

  • Democracy vs. dictatorship
  • Liberty vs. tyranny
  • Rule of law vs. totalitarian control

In short, the brief explanation given to U.S. soldiers in Europe was that they were fighting to preserve freedom, defeat Nazi tyranny, and secure a democratic future for themselves and the world.

Mentors.net - a Professional Development Resource

Mentors.net was founded in 1995 as a professional development resource for school administrators leading new teacher induction programs. It soon evolved into a destination where both new and student teachers could reflect on their teaching experiences. Now, nearly thirty years later, Mentors.net has taken on a new direction—serving as a platform for beginning teachers, preservice educators, and

other professionals to share their insights and experiences from the early years of teaching, with a focus on integrating artificial intelligence. We invite you to contribute by sharing your experiences in the form of a journal article, story, reflection, or timely tips, especially on how you incorporate AI into your teaching

practice. Submissions may range from a 500-word personal reflection to a 2,000-word article with formal citations.
