Practice makes perfect, and perfect practice leads to mastery, according to a 2025 study.
Researchers looked at a strategy called “mastery quizzing,” observing 952 adult participants as they learned about a concept in psychology and then took multiple-choice quizzes with immediate corrective feedback until they scored 100% on a single attempt. Compared with the control group—who took 1, 2, or 3 quizzes without feedback—participants in the mastery group performed over 10% better on tests 2 days later, a clear signal of better retention.
Pushing students to achieve perfect quiz scores may not be practical when teachers have pacing guidelines. Still, the study confirms the value of regular retrieval practice and timely feedback, and suggests that giving multiple, low-stakes quizzes and providing the correct answers immediately reinforces crucial material—and raises final test scores.
