Schools are extraordinarily good at keeping people busy.

The bell rings. Students change classes. Teachers introduce objectives. Assignments are completed. Assessments are administered. Data are collected. Then everyone moves to the next lesson, unit, standard, and marking period.

But there is an uncomfortable question hidden inside all that activity:

When do students have time to think?

Moriarty and Broderick invite educators to consider something increasingly countercultural: meaningful learning sometimes requires us to slow down.

Ideas need time to settle.

Questions need time to develop.

Connections need time to form.

Students need opportunities to wrestle with uncertainty before adults provide the answer.

Sometimes the pause is where the learning happens.

Audit curriculum pacing and identify places where coverage may be competing with understanding.

Look during classroom walkthroughs for evidence of student thinking—not simply teacher activity.

Encourage teachers to experiment with longer wait time after asking challenging questions.

Protect opportunities for reflection, independent reading, writing, discussion, and productive struggle.

Ask PLCs to identify the concepts students must understand deeply rather than treating every standard as equally deserving of instructional time.

Reconsider whether every available minute of the school day needs to be programmed.

Model the same behavior with adults. Give faculty time to think, process and discuss before demanding decisions or responses.

School leaders should ask themselves:

Where are we rushing students simply because the calendar tells us to move on?

Think about faculty meetings.

Professional development.

Curriculum pacing.

Classroom questioning.

Testing schedules.

Even conversations with students.

How often do we unintentionally communicate:

“Hurry up. We have to get to the next thing.”

Perhaps one characteristic of a great school is that it knows when not to move on.

There are moments when students need another example.

Another conversation.

Another attempt.

Another question.

Or perhaps no additional instruction at all.

Just time.

Time to wonder.

Time to struggle.

Time to connect.

Time to make meaning.

In a culture increasingly obsessed with speed, productivity, instant answers, and artificial intelligence capable of responding in seconds, schools may have an even greater responsibility to protect something profoundly human:

The slow process of developing understanding.

Great teachers know that not everything important can be accelerated.

Sometimes the most powerful instructional strategy is remarkably simple.
