Leadership lessons from the Met Opera's star conductor
James Levine, star conductor of New York's Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, says his leadership philosophy is simply to get out of the way and let the musicians show off their skills. After one particularly spectacular performance, Levine downplayed his role, saying he had simply facilitated the musicians' performance. "I didn't play a single sound," Levine said. "One of the most important things conductors don't do is get in the way of the artistry of the musicians who are playing."
