Chronic absenteeism remains a significant issue in US schools, with 23% of students affected in the 2023-24 school year, according to FutureEd analysis. The problem is most severe in high school and kindergarten, with 12th-graders and ninth-graders showing the highest rates, with some states such as Mississippi, Oregon, and the District of Columbia reporting senior absenteeism rates as high as 50%.
