More states are mandating the teaching of Indigenous history, with some codifying the requirement into state constitutions and others using state statutes. Some states lack a mandate that focuses on Native American history, but are considering initiatives -- including Alaska, Kansas and Minnesota -- that align with guidance from the National Council for the Social Studies, which supports, in part, "the creation and implementation of social studies curricula that explicitly present and emphasize accurate narratives of the lives, experiences, and histories of Indigenous Peoples."
