How Involving Students Can Prevent School Violence

Whether you want to believe it or not, school violence is a thing. We’re not talking about bullying (either in person or cyber-bullying, though those are clearly huge issues for school aged children as well, but we’re talking about more serious school violence. Columbine. Virginia Tech. Sandy Hook. While those names are sadly well known to many people, there are many, many more instances of school violence that just aren’t as widely reported as these. According to Wikipedia, there were 51 school shootings between 2000-2009, 97 between 2010 and 2014, with 31 in 2014 alone. And that is just accounting for school shootings and only in the United States – that doesn’t include other types of violence (stabbing and physical fighting for example).

So what’s a teacher to do? (This piece from CBS on teachers and firearms training is really interesting, too). Involving everyone is the first step – teachers, administrators, students, parents, the community. The handy infographic below looks at how to include students in preventing school violence. Mentors.net - a Professional Development Resource

Mentors.net was founded in 1995 as a professional development resource for school administrators leading new teacher induction programs. It soon evolved into a destination where both new and student teachers could reflect on their teaching experiences. Now, nearly thirty years later, Mentors.net has taken on a new direction—serving as a platform for beginning teachers, preservice educators, and

other professionals to share their insights and experiences from the early years of teaching, with a focus on integrating artificial intelligence. We invite you to contribute by sharing your experiences in the form of a journal article, story, reflection, or timely tips, especially on how you incorporate AI into your teaching

practice. Submissions may range from a 500-word personal reflection to a 2,000-word article with formal citations.
