Academic integrity policies often fail for a simple reason: schools treat them as discipline policies rather than learning policies. A strong policy certainly defines cheating and establishes consequences, but great schools go further. They build a culture in which students understand what honest academic work looks like, why it matters, and how expectations apply to emerging technologies such as generative AI.
The International Center for Academic Integrity offers a useful starting point, defining academic integrity around six values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage. (Academic Integrity) Those values suggest that the goal should not simply be catching dishonest students. It should be developing honest ones.
Great schools begin by bringing teachers, administrators, students, and ideally parents together to answer a deceptively difficult question: What constitutes academic dishonesty in our school?
The policy should address traditional violations—copying, plagiarism, unauthorized collaboration, fabrication, and obtaining test materials—as well as AI. Students need to know when AI is prohibited, when it may be used for brainstorming or feedback, and when its use must be acknowledged.
Clarity matters. “Do your own work” is no longer specific enough.
Students should be taught academic integrity, not merely asked to sign a document saying they understand it.
Early in the year, teachers can present realistic scenarios: Is asking AI to explain a difficult concept cheating? What about asking it to write a paragraph? Can two students compare homework answers? When does collaboration become copying?
Discussing ambiguous cases helps students develop ethical judgment. It also gives faculty an opportunity to establish consistent expectations before violations occur.
Policy alone cannot compensate for poorly designed assessments.
Teachers should increasingly gather evidence of learning through drafts, conferences, oral explanations, in-class writing, demonstrations, student reflection, and application of knowledge. When teachers understand how students arrived at an answer, authorship becomes more visible.
Assessment conditions matter as well. Cagala, Glogowsky, and Rincke found in a field experiment that close monitoring eliminated detected copying during university examinations. Intriguingly, an honesty declaration actually increased cheating in their experiment—an important reminder that intuitive anti-cheating strategies should be tested rather than assumed effective. Great policies distinguish between mistakes, misunderstandings, poor judgment, and deliberate deception.
A student who incorrectly cites a source should not necessarily receive the same consequence as one who deliberately purchases an essay or secretly submits AI-generated work as their own.
Consequences should be predictable, proportionate, and consistently applied. Fairness is itself one of the fundamental values of academic integrity. (Academic Integrity)
Whenever possible, consequences should also include learning: revising work, completing an integrity reflection, meeting with the teacher, demonstrating understanding orally, or relearning proper citation and AI-use practices.
Nothing undermines an integrity policy faster than radically different expectations from classroom to classroom.
Administrators should provide professional development, common definitions, sample syllabus language, AI guidance, parent communication templates, and procedures for reporting violations. Teachers still need professional discretion, but students should not encounter one definition of cheating in English and another in science.
Academic integrity is no longer a “write it once and put it in the handbook” issue. AI alone makes annual review essential.
Leaders should examine violation data, survey students and teachers, identify confusing provisions, review new technologies, and ask whether consequences are being applied equitably.
The most important measure of success isn't how many students a school catches cheating.
It is how many students come to understand that the purpose of school isn't merely producing acceptable answers. It is becoming a person capable of producing those answers—and having the integrity to make sure the work is genuinely your own.
