Determine the purpose, use of extra credit

Awarding extra credit may be counter to grading goals, such as measuring understanding and providing accountability, writes Barbara Blackburn, an author and former educator. In this article, Blackburn proposes an alternative approach of allowing students to redo work to demonstrate increased understanding without relying on extra credit options to recover points on an assignment.
