Without background knowledge, students flounder. But how much topical information is really needed before a lesson can begin?

In a 2019 study, researchers probed the background knowledge of over 3,500 high school students, mapping the conceptual terrain of scientific terms related to the topic of ecology. The more familiar students were with specialized terms—habitat or biodiversity, for example—the higher their background knowledge score.
