Event Description

We’re launching a ship of ideas and calling it From STEM to STERN

Please join us for a Wine & Cheese Educators Reception on Wednesday, October 5, 4:00 – 6:00  PM at the Maritime Explorium, located in the historic Chandlery Building in Port Jefferson. We are launching a new program that will be of interest to you.

Is your staff wondering how to transition to the New York State Core Standards in English/language arts and literacy?  Are you grappling with how to change from teaching the “old’ math standards to the organizing principles of the new common core?  Are you discussing how the newly released K–12 Science Education Framework fits in? And now that New York State no longer tests elementary and middle school social studies, are you debating how to keep its important themes alive in the curriculum?

We’ve been thinking about the same issues and we have a response: From STEM to STERN, a unique student field trip and teacher professional development program, merged into one!

The Maritime Explorium provides cutting edge exhibits and curriculum. Our goal is to help students and teachers become partners in exploring academic concepts that meet state objectives, go beyond state tests, and are fundamental to understanding the ways in which our world works.

Our distinctive curriculum is problem-based -- while students learn concepts at deeper levels with transferable skills, teachers learn new instructional strategies aligned with the common core standards. Trips to the museum are regionally accessible, affordable, and transformative for all ages.

Let us show you what we mean. Please join us on October 5 and invite your administrators and teachers. Kindly RSVP to Admin@MaritimeExplorium.org before September 30

Mentors.net - a Professional Development Resource

Mentors.net was founded in 1995 as a professional development resource for school administrators leading new teacher induction programs. It soon evolved into a destination where both new and student teachers could reflect on their teaching experiences. Now, nearly thirty years later, Mentors.net has taken on a new direction—serving as a platform for beginning teachers, preservice educators, and

other professionals to share their insights and experiences from the early years of teaching, with a focus on integrating artificial intelligence. We invite you to contribute by sharing your experiences in the form of a journal article, story, reflection, or timely tips, especially on how you incorporate AI into your teaching

practice. Submissions may range from a 500-word personal reflection to a 2,000-word article with formal citations.
