Dear Colleagues

What makes some students love learning, crave challenge, value effort and persist in the face of obstacles? According to nationally recognized researchers Lisa Blackwell and Carol Dweck, these successful students have a "Growth Mindset" and are mastery-oriented learners. When students believe that they can grow their brains with effort and practice, they too can develop a Growth Mindset.

I'd like to personally invite you to join us at the 6th Annual LI SEL Forum Annual Conference, "Building Student Motivation and Achievement Through a Growth Mindset." Dr. Blackwell, our keynote speaker will introduce us to Mindset theories and their application in schools. Fostering growth mindsets in adults and students is directly linked to increasing motivation, effort and academic success, as well as developing a socially and emotionally healthy learning environment.

The following link will take you directly to the registration brochure. We encourage you to bring a team of educators, parents and board of education members from your school. The day will be filled with intriguing information and "try this tomorrow" practical applications.

Don't want to wait until February to learn more? Then please join me on December 9th at Western Suffolk BOCES Conference Center, Wheatley Heights, NY when I will present an introductory workshop on Growth Mindset from 4 - 6 PM. (Fee: $25.00)

Here is the link for the December workshop: "Fostering Student Motivation and Effort: The Growth Mindset Factor," Joan Fretz, presenter: http://www.wsboces.org/library/pdfs/iss2249.pdf (copy and paste into your browser)

I also encourage you to read Carol Dweck's recent article, "Even Geniuses Work Hard," featured in the September issue of ASCD"s Educational Leadership:

Take your first step towards creating a positive, Growth Mindset environment, where students understand that meaningful success requires effort. Reserve your place today for our February conference and December workshop. Feel free to contact me directly for any questions about Growth Mindset and Optimal Learning Experiences. Contact Debbie Maxwell at dmaxwell@wsboces.org for registration questions.

Hope you'll join us!
