At 7pm on October 27, Operation SPLASH (Stop Polluting Littering and Save Harbors ) will host the first-ever screening of the new documentary-short, “Standing Against the Tide, the Story of Operation SPLASH.” This eye-opening documentary will appropriately debut at the Freeport Museum on the Nautical Mile.

The film was written, produced, directed and edited by Hofstra University students Corey Protin and Alexandra Faul. This 15-minute movie documents the 22-year history of Operation SPLASH and their never-ending battle against polluted Long Island waterways. Working on this project has opened my eyes to Long Island’s large environmental issues which I think every resident should know about," said Alexandra Faul. Both students will be graduating this May with a Bachelor degrees in video, TV, and film.

Rob Weltner, president of Operation SPLASH said “We're very fortunate to have so many unselfish, hard-working volunteers in Operation SPLASH. And for their efforts to be captured in this wonderful short film by Corey and Alexandra, it reminds us all that there are good people doing great things for our environment…because they care."

Special guests, elected officials and local dignitaries have been invited to attend the free Premiere Party, and the general public is welcome to attend as well. The event will begin at 7pm and includes live music by "Bobby Blues and his All-Star Review," environmental displays and light refreshments. The Freeport Museum is located at 202 Woodcleft Avenue in Freeport. Reservations can be made by calling 516-378-4770.

Founded in Freeport in 1990, Operation SPLASH is a 2,500 member, grassroots, all-volunteer organization dedicated to improving the quality of the waterways along Long Island’s South Shore. Throughout its 22 year history, SPLASH volunteers have removed more than 1,000,000 pounds of trash from local waterways while working on other projects to protect and preserve the fragile South Shore estuaries. Open membership meetings are held at the Freeport Recreation Center on the first Tuesday of every month at 7:30pm. SPLASH is an amazing group of grassroots activists working hard to clean up the South Shore of Long Island. Our boats are out every day- weather permitting, carrying dedicated volunteers who strive to keep our South Shore waters clean and free of debris. Students looking for community service  can jump right in and teachers looking to network and help to grow this new museum are needed now, to ensure its success.
