Enid Martinez - Teaching English Language Learners

Enid is a literacy consultant working with educators across the nation and the world to strengthen reading and writing instruction. Enid was a Senior Staff Developer for more than 10 years at the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project where she led much of the primary work in Word Study and Shared Reading as well as the ELL work. Enid co-led the RWP’s work with the national reading initiative, Palabras Mágicas, with Emily supporting teachers in Ministry schools across Guadalajara, Mexico, as well as led the initial research trip.

Leading workshops, providing on-site professional development and teaching at institutes across the country in both English and Spanish are just a part of what Enid brings to the educational community. Her annual Advanced sections at TCRWP institutes have predominantly focused on shared reading, word study, interactive writing, guided reading, and small group work, and served as a powerful learning space for many of her colleagues within the Project. Building on the work and thinking she shares alongside Donald Bear and his Words Their Way community, including Lori Helman and her ELL work, Enid has led numerous Specialty groups on working with ELLs and incorporating word study in classrooms. For several years, she co-led a K-5 Specialty course with Emily supporting language learners in schools using balanced literacy components.

Enid is a sought-after presenter and regularly fields requests from a wide range of audiences. She presented at the Billy Askew conference at Texas Women’s University outside of Dallas, TX. She was a part of multiple sessions at the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) conferences. In Barbados, she led sessions at the Caribbean Literacy and Numeracy conference (2008) for educators and administrators from across the region. The Fall of 2010 had Enid in Dubai, UAE, leading a week-long writing institute for international schools sponsored by Chapters International. Enid also presented at a reading institute in Valencia, Spain at the American School of Valencia with Ginny Lockwood (2013).

Prior to her work at the Teachers College Reading and Project she was a Literacy Coordinator for Literacy Collaborative training at Lesley University in Boston, with Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell. Enid’s heart grew to the literacy work and the focus on ELLs during the more than ten years she was a bilingual and mainstream classroom teacher in New York State.
