When Schools Make Children Cry

On why my daughter cries at night because she can’t read. She’s six.

A few months into first grade, my daughter shed a few quiet tears at bedtime while reading her nightly take-home book. As I looked over to ask what was wrong, she began to sob.

“Everyone can read but me,” she cried.

I was stumped. She’s only in first grade. Surely she isn’t the only student in the class that’s not reading yet.

“I am sure that’s not true. You just started first grade,” I replied.

Then she lost it completely.
