When I was in grad school, I, like all my classmates, dreamed of having my own classroom filled with the familiar and friendly faces of my beloved future students. I had no idea that I was about to embark upon a challenging 5-year journey of substitute teaching.

Like most substitute teachers, I learned early on how hard that job could be, and often wished that others had been more honest about the inherent challenges of that line of work.

I struggled for months until I figured out a strategy that consistently helped me find success: Showing the students that I knew their names within the first hour of the day.
