Getting into my rental car in Detroit last week, I decided to check my email before hitting the road to head home. It was Friday before the first day of classes, and as the newly-installed chair of the Mathematics Department, I'd taken a bit of a risk in spending the day away from the department, because the Friday before classes start is the witching hour: the time when major catastrophes-in-progress tend to come over the horizon.
