Yesterday, a small plane made an emergency landing on Route 231 in Babylon.  I'm reading the article with my students, focusing on all the factors that the pilot considered when deciding where to land.  It would make a great connection to Gary Paulsen's novel, Hatchet.  If you are reading that with your students, they could identify all the options Brian considered when he had to land the plane, and compare and contrast them with this pilot's options and potential consequences.  It could lead to a discussion of the decision-making process.
The article also offers the opportunity to explore language.  The idiom "cool as a cucumber," is used as well as the term "mayday." A word family could be introduced for the terms airport, airplane, aerobatics, aeronautics, and aerialist.   Also, the pilot is called, "the new Sully."  Students could research the story behind that reference.

Happy reading and safe landings,
Christine
