Shifting the Focus from Grades to Learning

As more and more schools adopt student-centric instructional models,we are seeing a growing interest in proficiency-based grading (also known as standards-based grading). Peer-to-peer learning, guided inquiry, project-based learning—all of these strategies require the assessment of skills that may not be fully captured by an A-F scale.


 

Proficiency-based grading can enable schools to capture out-of-the-box learning moments and assess students in more meaningful ways. When implemented well, proficiency-based grading incorporates all of the traits of effective assessment in a way that addresses differentlearning levels, identifies deficiencies, and accurately reflects performance.

 

This approach has been critical for Creative Minds Charter School, in Washington, D.C.The school leadership found that traditional grading systems were incompatible with the types of learning experiences that were happening at the school. Theyneeded a way to reflectstudents' level of mastery on projects and coursework across multiple standards and content areas at one time.They landed on proficiency-based grading as a way to better track student performance and communicate learning progress to parents.
