My BS was in Computer Science. I worked for over 20 in the software business. At the age of 45 I was fortunately laid off and was able to reviewed my life. I wanted to find a profession in which I could earn enough of a living tto support my family (3 children - single mom) while contibuting to the general good of our society. I decided to become a teacher.
I called my local district HR person. She told me that older teachers were not considered for elementary positions because they 'do not have the energy'. She advised me to work at the secondary level in a high needs area. I choose Earth Science - because Stony Brook University insisted that my credits were woo old for their Math program.
I graduated in 2004. I have always been able to secure a position but never long enough to get tenure. I believe that is where the ageism comes to play. I am now working in NYC and I believe I am well liked, respected and will be able to secure tenure here.
I have also completed my SBL and SDL certifications. Maybe I will be able to move up the ladder here in NYC.
