Recent poll on students' reaction to testing

Hi Mike!

Today's poll on students' reaction to testing excludes the possibility/probability of students becoming apathetic towards testing, especially given all the pre- and post-tests that will be added to their load, in addition to all the NYS assessments.  I predict that the law of diminishing returns will be in effect and that the more we test, the less meaningful to students these tests will become, and the results will not be indicative of the goal of the tests.

Lisa, I understand your frustration with the test and your students' reaction to that question and the use of valuable time trying to make sense of it.

In my opinion, it's just a matter of time until parents tell their children not to worry about their performance on the test as the test is "testing how well the teacher taught" and the students will have no culpability for their performance.  It has already happened. Pre- and post-tests in every subject? This is good for children????

Back in the day...before the overtesting we are all subjected to preparing students for...we were able to teach our kids how to learn. How to ask questions, how to seek answers, how to present the problems to others, how to summarize and come to conclusions. Now...pineapples without sleeves?!!?!? Now DOE has said they will discount that reading passage and question set...it makes no difference. I have students who spent over half of their time on that nonsense, with the consequence of not being able to effectively focus and conclude the remainder of the exam. They were left unable to recover their balance from that and said that they performed worse on the balance than they could have done. No chlidren should ever be subjected to this stress level. When do we get to go back to teaching to learn, not teach to tests about pineapples without sleaves?

Could be a possibility that I hadn't considered.  Interesting post.
