Nationally, 27 percent of teachers are chronically absent, meaning they miss at least eleven days of school for sick or personal reasons. That’s unfortunate because research shows that a ten-day increase in teacher absenteeism is associated with significant losses to student learning. To fix this problem, policymakers should take a handful of steps, including reducing the number of guaranteed paid sick or personal days and limiting the number of unused sick days teachers can carry over from one year to the next.
