Productivity vs creativity in writing by Adriana Escobar

Productivity vs creativity in writing by Adriana Escobar

Many people argue what is more important, productivity or creativity. But if you want to write really good academic papers, you should be both productive and creative.

If your work is creative but not productive, you may lose a lot of your money and time. If it’s productive but not creative, you can get your result in time but it may not be interesting for other people.

How to improve your productivity

You should have a schedule of activities. It helps you to find enough time for learning, work, sports, and relaxing. If you think that your schedule is not very efficient, reorganize it until it works as it should.

The quality of food that you eat also matters. Healthy food is good for your brains and helps you to work more effectively.

Find places where you are most productive. It may be restaurants and cafés, parks and squares. Many students work well in libraries and campuses, in collaboration with other students.

Try to find things that have a bad influence on your productivity. For example:

  • Routine tasks that you repeat many times. Find a way to make them more interesting.
  • Some people don’t work very effectively in silence. So you can listen to the music while writing, and if you are in a room with other people, use your headphones.
  • Computer games and online gaming. When you play too much time, you have less time for writing.
  • Disturbing problems. Solve them and you will be able to focus on your writing.
  • You should also use modern software, such as online documents, personal organizers, search engines. It helps you to save time when works on academic or other papers.

How to improve your creativity

Even if you don’t consider yourself as a creative person, you can work on it and get results. This is the list of several ideas:

  • Read many good books. It helps you to find your style, learn more words, think like a writer.
  • Don’t forget about another kinds of art, such as music, painting, and movies, which also help you to be more creative.
  • Before writing academic paper, try to write everything you think, without any limits.
  • Write in other genres, you may even try to write poetry.

You should understand that it takes time to improve productivity and creativity, and you have to make an effort. If now you spent minutes on writing a sentence, later you’ll be able to write much faster. The same can be said about creativity, you’ll find your style and the right direction.

Mentors.net - a Professional Development Resource

Mentors.net was founded in 1995 as a professional development resource for school administrators leading new teacher induction programs. It soon evolved into a destination where both new and student teachers could reflect on their teaching experiences. Now, nearly thirty years later, Mentors.net has taken on a new direction—serving as a platform for beginning teachers, preservice educators, and

other professionals to share their insights and experiences from the early years of teaching, with a focus on integrating artificial intelligence. We invite you to contribute by sharing your experiences in the form of a journal article, story, reflection, or timely tips, especially on how you incorporate AI into your teaching

practice. Submissions may range from a 500-word personal reflection to a 2,000-word article with formal citations.
