The argument for later start times for high school students is not a new one. The longer we do not engage this question, the more information supporting the idea comes to light. With all the attention drawn toward common core issues, standardized testing, lack of resources, teacher evaluation, student mobility and poverty, taking on this leviathan locally is often avoided. There are times, on occasion, when I wonder about education and this is one of them. It is as obvious as can be that students do not like getting up early. Since it is about them learning and not about our work day, I have no idea why we start school so early. I know high school students that get up around 5am to start there day. The better environment we create for student learning the better they will perform. If that is the objective then school should be later.
