January 21, 2013

A few years ago, I made a family calendar as Christmas gifts for my relatives.  Using an online photo site, I uploaded family photos for each person's birthday, anniversary, holidays, etc.  I figured my relatives would enjoy the calendar gifts, but what I didn't count on was the year-long pressure resulting from the calendar.  At every event since the first calendar, every time a picture is snapped, I'm greeted with, "That has to go in the next calendar."  When I show some people a picture, I'm sometimes greeted with "That can't go in the calendar!"  As our family has grown, so has the task of creating the calendar.  There are more families to send the calendar to, and more birthdays and anniversaries to include.  As one year draws to a close and a new year approaches, there is a marked uptick  in the number of photo discs and email pics that that get shared with me.   I'm really very happy that what started as a little "add-on" gift has made people so happy, and given them something to speculate about during the year.  So what would be the literacy teacher's equivalent of a family calendar?  Why, an author calendar, of course!  I just found this calendar site that marks authors' birthdays and even suggests lesson plans.  However, if you are really creative, you and your students could create your own author calendars and upload photos of authors and excerpts from their works.  Enjoy, and since we are talking about calendars and since it is still January, happy new year!  (How far into January one can still say, "Happy new year," will have to be a topic for another post.)
Happy reading,
Christine
