All of this is beside the point if the school insists on making children memorize sight-words. That will short-circuit the kid a year or two, and make sure he hates reading. All the phonics experts say that children should be reading by the end of first grade. If anything close to that is happening, the kids will be all right. They will find topics they like to read about. But if they don't quickly become fluent, comfortable readers, then those children may never be fluent, comfortable readers.
