5 Conventional Career Advice You Should Ignore

Tons of career advice has been around for a long time. Most, if not all, hard-working professionals thought that those pieces of advice were the code to their success. However, do not hang on too much on some tips because it could lead you to frustration.

Don't be left so far behind and become clueless about career advancement. Check out these conventional career advice that you should completely ignore.

1. Work Hard to Get Ahead.

If you think that your hard work is enough to get you noticed and put you in the front row for the next level promotion? You better think again. Experts say that it takes more than hard work to create success in your current career. Yes, you need to be a sedulous worker but don’t be fooled that good performance alone will result in your career success.

Apart from working diligently, remember to set your own goals and align it directly to your company. Moreover, understand your management's value system and how it will benefit you in your career.

2. Let Your Work Speak for Itself.

To become successful on what you're doing you should not believe on rubbish career advice. It only robs you of the big opportunity to showcase your work in a professional manner and your worth to the company. Be an outstanding performer and dynamic communicator. Define the purpose and direction of your life and career success. Communicate clearly the value you created with your work to your boss and your team.

3. Expect recognition to just happen.

They say patience is a virtue but if you keep on waiting for the recognition you've wanted for so long in your work, you're not going anywhere. Big promotions and salary increase never happen without an open discussion between the employee and the employer. For you to move up on the corporate ladder, you need to learn how to ask properly. Create a power career for yourself and ask for the promotion, the raise or both without fear of rejection.

4. Follow the Easiest and Most Lucrative Career Path.

There is no easy way to get a job but there can be strategies to get into the easiest and most lucrative career path. Some people chose whatever job is available just to earn money and get a regular income. This is not a bad idea and not a good one either. If it's career growth you're after, you have to figure out what you’re good at and turning your passion into a career.

5. Never Give Up.

You've probably heard this advice many times from different people especially during difficult times. Sometimes you hold unto these three words thinking that it pushes you to your perceived limits. Nonetheless, the sad reality behind this advice is that if you don't leave things that clearly aren't working on your career goals, you won't able to move forward. If you refuse to give up something good for something better, you only end up wasting your time and energy.
