Most recently, I have experienced coaching the instruction of English Language Learners (ELL) in a monolingual Kindergarten. I find that over the years I have discovered an understanding and a practical approach for facilitating the skills needed by primary age students to acquire language in various content areas. My coaching goal is to share the fruits of what I have learned in the classroom, as well as by raising children. I view coaching as an on-going learning process for everyone involved, and I hope to see many successes as a result.

Primarily, I teach Spanish through our Foreign Language Elementary School (FLES) Program in Uniondale, NY. I started this program in 2004 teaching Kindergarten in the five elementary schools. Development of FLES continued yearly as the program grew, so we now offer Spanish FLES in grades K to 5 once a week for about 50 minutes throughout the five elementary schools.

I have found that our parents and children are our strongest advocates. Students “love” learning Spanish. I continue to be amazed as I hear their language acquisition over they years! I have a mix of English Language Learners as well as monolingual students. It seems that however hard I “push” them, they reach these goals that “push” me further to enrich their learning in multiple directions! Yes, my students keep me passionate about what goes on in my classrooms!

As Common Core literacy encompasses every subject area, I advocate for the instruction and funding of Languages Other Than English (LOTE), literacy.
The following are just three summaries and quotations from the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers (NYSAFLT) Advocacy Committee:

• Strong evidence shows that time spent on foreign language study strongly reinforces the core subject areas of reading, English language literacy, social studies and math. Foreign language learners consistently outperform control groups in core subject areas on standardized tests, often significantly. (Armstrong & Rogers 1997; Saunders 1998; Masciantonio 1977;Rafferty 1986; Andrade 1989; Kretschmer & Kretschmer 1989)
• "Interest in and support for language study has been strengthened in the United States in recent years by the growing recognition that proficiency in more than one language benefits both individual learners and society. For the individual language learner, research has found a positive link between second language proficiency and cognitive and academic ability. (And) a multilingual workforce enhances America's economic competitiveness abroad, helps maintain our political and security interests, and promotes tolerance and intercultural awareness." (Marcos & Peyton 2000)
• The benefits to society are many. Americans fluent in other languages improve global communication, enhance our economic competitiveness abroad, and maintain our political and security interests. (Center for Applied Linguistics 2004)

My certifications include the following certification:
PreK-6th Elementary
Spanish 7 to 12
Spanish N to 6
School District Administrator
Bilingual Education
English to Speakers of Other Languages

As a member of the NYSAFLT and the Long Island Language Teachers Association (LILT), I have volunteered to present workshops for world language instruction.
